Is Your Refrigerator Running?

By admin On August 3rd, 2020 in Uncategorized /

Well… forget about catching it and go ahead and unplug it and let OPPD give you $35 to haul it away.

The program starts today and will roundup nearly 1700 old but still running refigerators from customer’s homes in the OPPD service territory. For your fridge to comply, it needs to be sucking energy from the grid (working), and it must be a secondary unit.

Older refrigerators can use 3 or 4 times as much energy as a more recent EnergyStar model and cost you well over $100 a year to keep running. Damian Montez was the first customer to participate in the program today and he said his fridge, circa 1987, was costing him over $150 a year. Far too expensive and wasteful, just to keep some pop cold. Check out the video for more information from Damian as well as OPPD Vice President, Tim Burke.

Check out this page on to get more information on how to cut the cord on your fridge and get $35.

Lighting Nutrition Facts

By admin On June 28th, 2020 in Uncategorized /

A new FTC regulation will add more information to your 2011 lighting purchases. The new information will be on the packaging and resemble food labels found on everything at the grocery store.

You’ll still be able to see the watts, or power consumption of the bulb you’re buying, but you’ll also get the lumens, or brightness, as well as the color temperature, how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ the light your purchasing will look. Other useful information, like an estimated yearly cost of running the bulb and the estimated life of the bulb will be included.

The information will be standardized and easy to find on these new labels and should make purchasing greener lighting even easier.

Pull the Plug on Your Second Fridge

By admin On June 17th, 2020 in Uncategorized /

Refigerators are one of the only appliances we consistently run throughout the year 24 hours a day. Tasked with the job of keeping our food cool, they consume a lot of energy.

So do you really need two?

Take a hard look at what you’ve got stacked away in your second and sometimes mostly forgotten fridge. Is it just a place where leftover food goes to die… or just keep your pop cold? Stick a couple cans in your main unit and replace them when you take one out.

And if you’re keeping your extra fridge in the garage, your making it work even harder, which costs you more through the summer months. So this weekend, go ahead and clean out last years thanksgiving turkey you were always going to make a soup out of and never did. Pull the plug, and never look back.

Throw the extra fridge on and you might find someone in need to give you a few bucks and hault it away.

Environment Day is Saturday, 6/5/10

By admin On June 4th, 2020 in Uncategorized /

How far would you go to commemorate the United Nations World Environment Day on Saturday, June 5?  100 miles?  50 miles? 10 miles?  How about just down to the Gene Leahy Mall in downtown Omaha?  That’s close for most, pretty easy to get to, and it will be a busy and fun place to be on Saturday.  The Green Omaha Coalition is sponsoring a variety of activities to celebrate World Environment Day, including a short program scheduled to begin about 11 a.m., followed by a walk open to all.  But wait…there’s more!  There will also be a number of booths open along 14th Street between Farnam and Douglas between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., and attendees will be able to enter a drawing to win a great bicycle from GreenStreet Cycles.  OPPD people will be there as well, staffing booth right in front of the library and handing out information and free stuff for young and old, alike.  If you’d like even more info, check out

This year, the students at Bancroft-Rosalie took their program one step further and made a fun video about their car and their program. Check it out and see if you recognize the spoof.

Thanks again to all the participants and volunteers that make Power Drive possible!
